Webb has the size Trestman prefers. Just look at his OL players in Montreal and you see that the always prefered the bigger and taller guys.
If we can fix the LG spot, this may help Webb big time.

If we draft Warmack or Cooper as LG, I think they would need a LT that knows how to play this position and this would help the rookie LG for sure.

I'm happy that I'm not Trestman/Kromer/Emery and have to make those decisions.

    Bushrod - Cooper - (Garza) - Louis - Webb/Carimi
that line looks much better than last years
That could work too if Kromer believes Bushrod will give us something Webb can't. Ya' gotta figure it's being evaluated and discussed. And Cooper would probably be a great pick in one if a LG is where they want to spend that pick. It makes the most sense right now from what I can see.

Knowing Emery if he's gonna be asked to get a LT the first thing he's gonna want to look at is what more am I getting for the dollars spent. Webb is a very low cost option. Anyone else probably costs him 5x as much or more and we're not gonna get 5x the player so where's the break point? I think that's what's going on in these discussion now because they all know that LT isn't being played as well as it should be.

Knowing Emery if he can avoid spending too much on that one need it allows him more freedom to upgrade more positions and add more depth and competition for starting spots. I think he's big on that way of doing things. If he can find a 2nd tier OT to put into the mix and push Webb I think he'd rather do that than spend the big bucks only to get a small improvement.

One thing we know for certain is that the passing game will change dramatically this year. We're going to a WCO and away from the downfield passing games that Martz and Tice liked so provided Cutler learns to make better decisions quicker his protection should benefit from that. Will that be enough to allow our OTs to provide better protection? That's part of the equation too.

Carimi struggled last year because of his injury and lack of being in football shape. I think that will improve and I also think we had as much or more problems handling the inside rush and stunts as we did the outside rush. The LG spot was a problem all year long and I think if we saw that stats on that we'd find that quite a few sacks and a lot of pressure came through there. So if anything needs to take a priority it's that. To make that short passing game work Cutler needs clear passing lanes and much of the time that's up to the interior guys to take care of.

We'll just need to see how things go after the Combine. That's gonna tell us a lot
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I know this won't end up popular too, but Carimi is more a guy that plays on the left side of the line. I also think he would be a good Guard at the NFL level.

    UFA - Carimi - Jones - Louis - Webb

Draft Jones, he will be there for sure. I think it's a waste but if we get a LT in Free Agency, move Webb back to RT and let Louis cover for him a bit. Trestman has a history of bigger guys playing the interior line and we would hide Carimis flaws and what he can't do. He wouldn't get pushed away that much when he is healthy and 100% but he struggled with the speed more than strenght most of the time.

Webb will and should stay. As bad as it feels to say this, but he OUTPLAYS his contract and for the money we pay him, he is valueable.

We would still have Garza, EWill and Brown for depth and could keep Scott - who's serviceable enough - as Swingtackle.

or we go with the best OT that will make it to Free Agency and sign Vollmer. Guy was rated as 4th best RT in the NFL last year, not past his prime and won't cost more than Bushrod will.

    Webb - Carimi - Jones - Louis - Vollmer
    or
    Webb - Cooper - Garza - Louis - Vollmer

That's what I would want to see and option 2 with Vollmer is what I prefer most. Still would have some nice depth too.

The point I've been trying to make regarding the middle protection for some time now you hit right on the head

Webb and Carimi did not play up to par, yes but they were the "fall guys"
for the interior disaster in some cases too

When the interior is getting blown up (ESP in 3 on 2 situations) it gave cutler no room to step up. This leads to the lack of ability to avoid the edge rush masking carimi and Webbs job that much harder.

If the qb has nowhere to go, then the tackles don't have to get best clean to give up a sack, the de just has to get a third of his body free and grab a hold of a now stationary qb.

The second issue here is the fact that we almost always were doubling the 1/2 tech off the snap to avoid the gut push and pocket collapsing. This disallows any help/save chances from the gaurd if our T gets best inside.

..and then there's those borderline comical 7-3 stunts where the DE would come clean off it thru A...

...or the equally drinking inducing times that we would allow a delayed MLB blitz to come clean because we have 2 guys with their heads and hips burried into the NT (first play of the packers game 1 comes to mind)

Webb would benifit from a good gaurd next to him, that's without a doubt
