Quade Out - Sandberg... NOT In
Quade has been let go by the Cubs. And now...

(WSCR) Mike Quade’s out, and Ryne Sandberg isn’t in.

In the press release detailing Quade’s dismissal from the Cubs, Theo Epstein stated he was looking for a manager who had experience managing or coaching at the major league level, effectively ending the idea that Sandberg would take over.
“Theo called me 10 minutes after they issued the press release (on Mike Quade) and told me that they have a list of guys and I’m not on it,” Sandberg told Barry Rozner of 670 The Score and the Daily Herald. “He wished me good luck and said he hoped I got a chance somewhere soon.
“He didn’t owe me that at all. He didn’t have to do that. It was a classy move and I’m very appreciative of the phone call. In the end, I wished him and everybody there good luck.”
Sandberg said he had no hard feeling towards Epstein or anyone in the Cubs organization. He even offered a piece of advice to Cubs fans:
“Cubs fans should have trust in Theo. They’re in great hands with him and Jed (Hoyer) and Jason (McLeod),” Sandberg said. “They’re heading in the right direction and they’re going to do everything in their power possible to get the Cubs where they ultimately want to be.”

I am disapointed, but I understand and trust The Theo Trio

Okay, can we just call them T3?
I understand their logic, it makes perfect sense. Ideally, you want your foreman to have major (league) experience. But there aren't an unlimited number of foremen and, once in awhile, you got to give a junior guy a shot.
I know they're all up in this stat-ball... whatever it's called. And that Ryno isn't one of those who actively uses that system. But I hope they just didn't dismiss him out-right. His record is enviable by any Trip-A manager. And frankly, I think a minor league manager is more familiar with running a ballclub than a major league pitching coach.

Completely agree, eapecially since he knows the Cubs farm system and the Cubs plan on going through a rebuild. You would have thought that he would have been the perfect candidate.
I am guessing Epstein knows all he thinks he needs to about Sandberg since he interviewed him last year for Boston for their Triple A team.

Not to mention the Cards are looking at him. Blech. But, couldn't he at least have been a bench coach, in case this next guy falls through, like Quade?

I've never been big on hiring old team players just because they used to play for that organization. You hear about it all the time from fans.... but in this case, sandberg is a legit candidate. I'm sure Theo knows more about what he's doing than I do, but like most, I'm disappointed that Ryno isn't a candidate. I agree with Halpert though... is Manager the only position available to him?

I don't think so. Not here. If he was, whoever the Manager was would always have to look over his shoulder because his replacement would be right there. The first time there was a losing streak, fans would be calling for the managers head because Sandberg was right there. I do not think that it would be fair to whoever the manager was to have a "rockstar" right behind him waiting for him to screw up so he could swoop in for the kill.

That's true, I hadn't taken that into consideration

I was really pulling for Sandberg as I felt he was the man for the rebuild. He knows the farm system and the kids they are likely to call up. After all, he was teaching them at every level and got good results out of them, even though the farm system has not been highly rated for a while. While managing at the major league level is much different than at the minor league level, I still think he would have been the best choice. But Theo must know something that we do not know. Perhaps his thoughts did not mesh with Theo's for how the team should be constructed. Sandberg's thoughts were based on the interview he had last year with Epstein for Boston's triple A club, so they might differ for the majors gig, but that is what Theo went off of. Right or wrong, I put my trust into Theo. He will bring in the guy he feels best fits his vision for the team going forward.
As far as the Cardinals gig, I have mixed feelings. I would love to see him get a major league coaching job somewhere, but it would kill me to see him get the Cardinals job. I don't think he has a shot at it really, since Oquendo is the in house favorite being LaRussa's bench coach. Doesn't hurt that he has Pujols backing either.
